Life Lessons From Fishing With My Dad

Growing up my dad and brothers loved to go fishing. We would gather up a bunch of worms, get a few cans of corn, load up a bunch of fishing poles and go to a creek, a pond, the beach or anywhere we could wet a hook. We did it for sport and rarely ever had to keep anything we caught, we used the proper equipment to be able to catch and release. Just as many of my friends hunted with their dads, we instead choose to fish. We fished in the fall and spring mostly when the weather was good and it wasn't so hot or cold. One main life lesson I learned from my good old dad was patience. I remember going to a pond and my dad would bait his hook, cast the line in and just sit and wait. Sometimes for hours until something bit the line, took off and bent that pole. He might reel it in on occasion to check the bait and make sure it was still good since the little "bait stealers" which are small fish that just nip at the bait until it falls off would eventually leave you with an

Going Camping- Five Reasons to Spend Time In Nature This Spring/Summer/Fall

I love to go camping in the North Carolina mountains with my family.  My old roommate from college and I used to go every summer in June for a weekend of camping, trout fishing, grilling good food and chilling out with a few cold ones in hand.  Camping is not for everyone and there are different ideas of camping according to who you ask.  My version of camping is a tent, some food, some fire wood, what supplies you need and go find a nice spot on a rushing creek (helps you sleep so good at night) set up and enjoy a few days and nights in the woods getting back to nature.  I have a favorite little spot called Mortimer campground.   It is open only during the spring and fall seasons in the NC mountains on the Wilson Creek Gorge.  If you are ever in NC go see that place it is awesome and has some really good water, great pictures, swimming and fishing. My wife and I plan a trip out west this summer to go enjoy nature and see some mountain parks, rivers, animals and whatever else gets thro

Top Five Destinations to Visit- Bucket List #1

Today I am writing about my top five destinations to travel and see once I retire in a few years from now. The plan is to jump in the car and take off out West and visit the sites, see nature at its best and experience the thrill of traveling, spending time with my wife and family along the way. I have a bucket list of foreign destinations as well but those will have to wait for now. The list below is built upon my specific interest in mountains, beautiful scenery, waterfalls, nature and river systems. 1- Grand Canyon- I know it is a prime location for nature lovers and very common. But the allure of such nature God has carved out by his hands is too much to pass up on this future trip. 2- Yellowstone National Park- Scenery, wildlife, nature, and just clean fresh air is a definite stop on my first swing out west. 3- Glacier National Forest- 700 lakes, rivers, hiking, animals and nature at irs finest await my family. Great pictures to be taken and memories to be made along this pa

Lady Speeding, Rookie Cop, Got To Go Right Now

Today I am continuing my series of stories about my family and today I am focusing on a true and hopefully funny story about my Dad.  Please enjoy and share! Lady Speeding, Rookie Cop, Got to Go Right Now Dad told us a story about a woman that was speeding one day. He was new to the police force and had just been let loose as a patrol officer.  He was patrolling a major road in town and a lady drove by him going 55 in a 35.  He instantly turned his car around and turned on his blue lights in hot pursuit of the speed demon flying down the road.  He got behind this lady and flashed his lights in an attempt to stop her.  She kept going and actually sped up so he wasn't quite sure what to do as a new cop, so he called it in.  They told him to continue pursuit and follow her, stay in radio contact and help was on the way to assist him. He stayed in pursuit for several blocks and the woman suddenly pulled over slamming on her brakes to stop making him almost hit her car.  He swerved to

The Lions

The Lions Today will be a quick write about my continued spiritual growth as I get closer to God everyday.  I prayed last night for God to give me direction, grace and mercy all the days of my life and as I ended, I asked if he had a specific message for me to send it.  Well, let me tell you that God is good, he is the greatest, he is the undefeated champion of all time.  I had been struggling with some health issues lately and have been really seeking God's word by reading the bible, researching, reading other blogs and praying.  All this as a way to gain a more direct connection to God and move forward with his plans in our lives. After asking for God to send me a message I dreamed about the Lion and a Shepard.  In the lion dream I saw two lions walking with each other like a pack would do. They kept their distance and walked near each other growling and grumbling as if they were seeking a meal.  I was watching them in the lion's den when suddenly someone threw a large piece

Traveling The Windy Roads With God

Traveling The Windy Roads With God In our life we have traveled down many winding roads not knowing exactly what lies ahead.  Most of these roads were paved, smooth and relatively straight.  Then there are the dirt roads, rocky roads, hilly roads, curvy roads and others that are exciting to travel on, but also make  you nervous as to just where you will end up and how long it will take you to get there.  We have traveled the mountain roads of Western North Carolina for many years and one of those we prefer is the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It is a beautiful windy road with awesome views, nature at its finest and so relaxing to the mind, body and soul.   My wife and I go up every October and ride the parkway to see the tree foliage change colors, look for waterfalls and spend time in Price Park (one of our favorites).  This October we decided to come back down the mountain on highway 221 and man it was a windy, curvy road with great views.  We discovered some new waterfalls, rock formations

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing Last night I went outside to just sit down in a chair in the cool November air and look at the stars. It was a very clear night, cold with no clouds above and the view was awesome.  I saw sparkling stars and God's wondrous creation at its finest.  I took the opportunity of the quietness to seek God's word and prayed to him asking for a message to write today.  I have been dreaming visions for many years and this election has been heavy on my mind and soul lately.  I am not talking about republican vs. democrat garbage, but Godly concerns and the deception that is stealing the minds, hearts and souls of America. My prayer was answered and I dreamed about a man, a deceitful man that was all about power.  This man was corrupt and not decent.  Men envied him and women secretly wanted to lie with him.  He had a power over people and was an expert at lying, cheating and deceiving people.  His intentions are opposite of what he says he will do.  He is bad fo
The Tree of Life In my backyard stands a grand pecan tree.  The tree is estimated to be 200-250 years old.  It is rooted very deep into the ground and has roots going out into the yard eight to ten feet long.  This tree is about ten feet around at the base and splits off four ways as it breaks into a perfect summer or fall day hangout.  The tree has huge twelve to fifteen inch limbs that stick out thirty to forty feet and offer the best shade on a hot summer day.   I like to stop underneath it and just sit there when I am mowing to feel the cool breeze under that huge canopy and talk to God.  It has a rope swing, a climbing ladder and limbs that can take you way up in the air.  Below it hangs a nice hammock to lie in and chill out and enjoy the view at night.  What I am describing is not made up, it really is that cool of a tree and place to hang out.  I loved climbing trees as a child and wish I would have had this one when I was younger.  I dare not swing on it now or try to climb.

A Cleansing Storm

(openA s inA a new ta title A great storm has come upon mankind. One that has sweep over the earth and consumed all of mankind. One that has divided them into two sides with ideals driven by good and evil. Millions have chosen good and stayed strong in the biblical principles stated in Galatians 5:22-24. While many millions of others have chosen evil as described in Galatians 5:19-21. I recently had another dream about a great storm of biblical proportions such as Daniel did in the old testament. A storm like man has never seen and one that will shake the foundations of all people. A storm that was very scary and made me sit up in bed and pray to God. A dream that I thanked him for showing me. A dream that I must share to the world and hope that it gets to as many people as possible. For this great storm is coming as predicted in Daniel. God had already been revealing himself to the world in small ways in preparation for this coming storm. He was giving people the opportu
Spiders vs. Me, Bathroom Battles and Facing Fear Today I am writing about an experience I had this morning in the bathroom as I was preparing for work.  I assume that your bathrooms are equipped like ours with nothing to kill a spider with other than toilet paper.  We don't have a fly swatter, shoes, sticks, etc. to face those mean little creepy crawly critters.  The standoff with these little mean monsters began after I had entered the bathroom to get ready to shower.  As I am getting ready to step into the shower, a mean looking spider about the size of a dime decides to walk across my foot.  Once I realize what it is I panic and about fall over dead right there in the bathroom.  Sorry for the visual but I am in my birthday suit preparing to bath and in no way prepared to face down a spider attack.  So I feel the little monster on my foot and kick as hard as I can, well that worked to get him off my foot, but didn't work so well as my foot bounced off the toilet bowl (ouc
